What to do if iTunes does not open on your computer: the best solutions

Downloaded from the official website, iTunes diligently played music, shared recommendations through Genius, allowed you to update software and replenish your electronic library with a variety of content. And then trouble came - iTunes won’t open on the computer. Restarting the computer does not help, it still gives an error.

Possible reasons

The all-powerful iTunes media player, which allows you to interact with files and documents in different ways and download music, movies and books from Apple digital stores, suffers from errors, problems, crashes and malfunctions for almost half of your life. Sometimes due to the fault of the developer (fresh, but not perfected updates, sometimes due to user actions (broken in the middle of synchronization, reluctance to update the software). In any case, all the reasons cannot be counted on the fingers of several hands (and is it even necessary? Failure already in hand, it’s time to look for answers) you can only guess and fight the symptoms, hoping in some way to find the treasured key to solving the problem.

Ways to solve the problem

You will have to deal with problems in different ways:

Malicious software

Viruses, spies, Trojans - it’s better to stop the fever that starts on your computer right away. And, if there is no permanent antivirus in the system, then you should turn to third-party services that allow you to clean every megabyte of infected information for free.

It’s worth paying attention to two assistants - and In both cases, you don’t have to understand the settings, just click “Next” and agree to the proposed conditions and requirements.

The check will take 5-10 minutes, at the end it remains to see what to do with the found “pests” - transfer to “Quarantine”, removal, step-by-step “cleaning” after rebooting the system are available. Just in case, it is better not to go against the proposed actions and agree to the requirements and conditions.

Safe mode

And we are not talking about Windows (7-10), but about the player from Apple. You will have to do this - hold down the Shift + Control key combination on your keyboard, click on the iTunes icon on the desktop or in the Start menu, wait until it loads completely (without releasing the keys), agree to switch to safe mode. If it works, you will have to deal with the installed plugins and extensions by completely removing the player.

Updating system component libraries

It's hard to imagine a PC without the latest version of DirectX or up-to-date video card drivers. If this does happen, then you will have to work with your hands and check several aspects of the system at once.

First of all, you will have to go through the libraries. Namely, available on the official Microsoft website, and both x64 and x86 are suitable (or it’s better to install two versions at once - it definitely won’t be worse).

It's time to move on to updating the software. And since manually searching for drivers for memory controllers, SATA connectors and chipsets is very problematic, you should pay attention to the tool available on the official website.

The free version is also suitable - the main thing is to run a system scan, and then update each of the available components (do not forget about saving a checkpoint!). The final step is to reboot and try to launch iTunes again!

Disconnecting from the network

Sometimes the media player, immediately after launch, tries to display the contents of several services at once - Apple Music (if you have purchased a subscription), or the iTunes Store. And, if for some reason the main pages of the listed services do not load, iTunes will also close, with an error, and even irrevocably. The best option to avoid such crashes is to temporarily disconnect from the network (turn off the router, disconnect from Wi-Fi, unplug the Ethernet cable) and try again. Perhaps this is the method that will help achieve a positive result.

Reinstalling the media player

If, after much wrangling, the methods listed above still do not work, then the last, most radical method remains.

The first step is to download from the official website. It is this tool that does an excellent job of uninstalling applications and at the same time allows you to deal with the remaining files and documents in the installation directories, and with deleting entries in the registry.

Along with iTunes, you should clean out both Apple Mobile Device Support and Apple Software Update. Completely and down to the ground. When the complete cleaning is completed and the system asks if you need to delete the remaining folders and other information, agree and wait for the procedure to complete. Be sure to reboot!

The final touch is to do it again (you will have to choose in advance which version is suitable for the system - 32-bit or 64-bit), then go through all the installation steps, check the box next to each additionally downloaded service, do not change the installation directory (let everything be unpacked and used exactly from the system drive "C"). Try to start again in normal mode.

None of the above methods worked? You can try to change the screen resolution (from “native Full HD” to an awkward 720p or even less, at least for a few minutes, for the sake of a quick check), create a new operating system account (or log in as “Guest”), disable everything available Microsoft antiviruses and firewalls.
