Removing the sidebar in the Opera browser. Windows Vista Sidebar The sidebar has

Greetings, dear visitor to the blog site.

What's happened lateral Windows panel 7 , in my opinion, basically all users of this operating system know. Although those who have Windows Vista probably also place mini-so-called desktop gadgets on it. And our brother Penserman is a pensioner, I think this is no exception.

So in this article I would like to dwell in more detail on this very sidebar of Windows 7. Talk about these gadgets. Consider the appropriateness of their use in light of the latest recommendations from the Microsoft Security Technical Center. And also suggest a way to remove this, useful at first glance, thing from your computer, if, of course, you make such a decision.

Windows 7 Sidebar – why is it needed?

Needless to say, this is a convenient thing. For example, I placed a CPU indicator on it. Sometimes I looked at these arrows when... The news feed is not a bad thing, I also often glanced at it. But most of all I liked currency rate gadgets, since I constantly monitor some exchange quotes. Conveniently, I turned on the computer and the information was in front of my eyes. So what does it give us:

  • quick access to information - it is always ready;
  • ease of use - no need to stop the main work with documents;

And that’s probably all that can be said about it. But nevertheless, its popularity among people was, at least until recently, quite high level. Moreover, new gadgets to suit your taste for the Windows 7 sidebar could always be downloaded on the Internet. All you had to do was click on the “Find gadgets on the Internet” button:

Do you remember this? Now if you click on this link, you will be taken to a page where the inscription “Gadgets are no longer available” appears.

Windows 7 Sidebar is no longer needed

You may have noticed that I've been writing about this sidebar and gadgets in the past tense since the beginning. And this is no coincidence. And all because Microsoft discovered serious vulnerabilities there. It turns out that attackers have learned to create programs that use Windows 7 and Windows Vista sidebar gadgets to gain absolute control over your computer.

And how does it feel to you? Is this convenience worth it, and even with their evil intentions? And probably these intentions will not bring you any benefit, but rather the opposite. As soon as I found out about this, I immediately got rid of this convenient little thing once and for all. And I advise you to do the same.

By the way, how to do this is described on the Microsoft Security Technical Center page. There are three ways to disable the Windows sidebar and gadgets. I will describe to you only one, and given that my main readers are pensermen - pensioners and teapots, I will do it in detail and with pictures.

Disable Windows Sidebar and Gadgets

We will do this with the help system registry. Of course, this is recommended only for advanced users and administrators. But any experienced user was once a teapot too. So don't be afraid, just do it first backup copy registry before editing. So that if something happens it can be used.

If someone is not confident in themselves, it is better not to take on this, since erroneous actions can very well lead to problems, and quite serious ones. Sometimes, after such failures, you have to reinstall the operating system. That's why it's necessary Necessarily! ! So let's get started.

Click “Start”, “Run”. Or press the Win+R keys and in the window that appears, type: regedit. Then click “OK”, in the next one also “Yes” and we get into the “Registry Editor” window. This is where we act carefully and carefully. Left-click on the triangle next to the folder HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE:

A list will open in which you need to find the folder SOFTWARE and also expand it with the left mouse button:

The following list will open, move the slider down and somewhere in the middle of the list we find the folder Microsoft. Expand:

We see the following list, again the slider down. Finding the folder Windows. Let's expand the list:

And at the very beginning we see the folder CurrentVersion, click on the triangle:

Slider down again. So we got to the subsection Policies. Let's click now right click mouse directly on this inscription:

Select “Create”, then “Section”:

A New section will appear in the list:

We don’t touch anything, we just type on the keyboard: Windows. This way we will enter the file name. This is what it will look like:

Now right-click on the newly created subsection Windows and again select “Create” and “Partition”:

Appears new section. As in the first case, now enter the file name: Sidebar. I won’t show you what it looks like. Right-click on Sidebar, select “Create”, and then not “Section”, as we did before, but “DWORD Value (32 bits)”:

This is what we get after our manipulations:

Enter the file name: TurnOffSidebar and again right-click on this name and select “Change”:

Enter the value “1” and click “OK”:

In the end it should look like this:

After making changes, you need to reboot or close the sidebar.exe process.

Well, you yourself know how to reboot, but I’ll tell you how to close this process.

Saying goodbye to the Windows sidebar

In order to complete the process, you need to call the “Task Manager”. Press Ctrl+Alt+Del, “Start task manager”. In the window that opens, click on “Processes”, find the inscription sidebar.exe, click on it and click on “End process”:

In the next window we confirm the seriousness of our intentions and the Windows sidebar will immediately disappear and will not appear the next time the computer is turned on.

And one more piece of advice. In order not to make mistakes when entering newly created names of sections and subsections, it is best to copy them directly from the text of the article and paste them where necessary. I think this will protect you from accidental mistakes, the consequences of which, as I wrote above, can be serious and unpleasant.

By the way, after removing this panel, I noticed that my laptop became quieter. At least, you can’t hear the periodic howling of the fan and freezing of pages in the steel is very rare. It’s no different that the attackers – the adversaries – have lost control of my PC! Or maybe it's my glitches?

With this, let me take my leave. And don’t regret that you lost such a convenient thing. It's not worth it Windows Sidebar, with all its useful gadgets, in order to endanger your computer and especially your personal data stored there. After all, it’s still more important.

More about the panel

The Opera browser comes with a sidebar by default. This is a specific place on the left edge of the screen, which is reserved for the quick access panel. The panel can contain both some browser functions and various applications. In some cases, this is convenient, because if you have to work with extensions, you can launch them with one click. But since most users are more conservative, many want to have a regular browser look without adding new features. Then the question arises of how to remove the sidebar in the Opera browser, but now a little about the panel itself.

How to remove the panel

To find out how to remove the sidebar in Opera, you need to go to the express panel. The panel also has its own settings and functionality. It can be used as an element that will always be visible, even when viewing websites, if the panel is pinned. If the panel is not needed, it can be left unattached, then it will only be visible on the express panel. You can either add the necessary elements to it or remove them from it. Next, you can move on to how you can remove the sidebar in the Opera browser. You can remove the sidebar without going into the settings. On the express panel in the lower left corner there is a small window icon, when you click on it, the side panel either docks or undocks.

Important! The sidebar is often confused with the extension panel. This panel allows you to place on the side the most necessary extensions that require quick access. It’s very easy to check which panel it is. To do this, you need to enter the key combination “Ctrl+Shift+S” on your keyboard.

There is another option. IN general settings browser, select the line called “Extensions”, where in the “Sidebar” item there will be a checkmark that needs to be unchecked. If this is added additional panel, which means this is not a sidebar and can be hidden with the same combination. If the problem is solved, then it was all about the extension panel.

It is not possible to remove the sidebar from the express panel; you can only prevent it from appearing when viewing website pages.

Also, previously, users encountered a similar problem and did not understand how to remove the top bar in Opera, but in the latest versions of the browser the top bar is not provided.

Conclusion

Removing the side panel is quite simple and can be done within a few seconds. If a problem arises and it is not clear how to remove the panel in Opera from above, the most correct solution would be to simply install latest version browser that does not have this function. Also, new versions are more secure than outdated ones, which have not been updated for a long time. Updated versions have better system data protection security, which is more likely to prevent any hacking attempts.
