“I was born and raised in one of the most beautiful Russian cities - my beloved St. Petersburg. Before 2011, the words remote work, travel and islands were familiar to me only by hearsay. I saw the sea only a few times in Crimea, and I was only passing through several cities in Russia.

“I spent all my childhood and student years in the small town of Kirovsk. Not far from St. Petersburg. Kindergarten, school, technical school... Nothing unusual. The St. Petersburg Technical College of Railway Transport was supposed to make me a specialist in Automated Systems Management (ACS), but in the 3rd year somehow everything didn’t work out.

There are many myths about making money online. Some people think that such an income cannot be high, while others associate freelancing with network marketing and fraud. But there are other people. Some of them are Vitaly Ichin and Lisa Gracheva. This couple is young entrepreneurs, video bloggers and information businessmen. In just 4.5 years of hard work, the guys managed to rise to the top of the freelance Olympus. Now young travelers have their own multi-thousand channel on YouTube and have a network of well-promoted accounts on Instagram and VK. The guys' story is a powerful motivator for ambitious youth who do not want to spend best years in the office.

St. Petersburg residents Vitaly Ichin, 29, and Lisa Gracheva, 27, are the authors and founders of the travel project “On Your Own.” This young couple has left boring offline jobs, Russian cold and routine far behind. And for 4.5 years now, Russian freelancers have been traveling and traveling around exotic hot countries.

The guys are incredibly positive YouTube bloggers with almost worldwide fame. They do not consider themselves either millionaires or cool businessmen. Young people have visited 34 countries of the world, purchased real estate in Russia, have accounts in large banks, which already contain savings. In the interview, Vitalik and Lisa openly say that interest on deposits is another source of monthly, albeit small, income.

When communicating with subscribers on Periscope, the guys easily share life hacks, give useful tips on the topic of making money online. They talk about their constantly growing income from advertising on VK and Instagram, and they also have affiliate programs, paid video courses, aerial shooting with a quadcopter and many other ways to earn money.

    - How it all began? How did you get into freelancing?

Vitaly: In 2011, I returned to St. Petersburg from the army and got a dull job as a security guard at an amusement park. The gray realities of St. Petersburg were not at all pleasing. The work brought in 18 thousand rubles, but I even managed to save it. In my free time, I worked on a group on VK, made beautiful pictures for posts, mastered Photoshop and other editors. After some time, I realized that you can make real money from the group. By that time, working as a security guard, I had saved up about 30 thousand rubles. I took a risk and invested it in promoting the “Diary of Success” group. The project took off. The first 100,000 subscribers were collected in just a month. The first money came from advertising. They could order up to 10 advertising posts from me per day. One post then cost 500-700 rubles.

Vitaly: After some time, the audience of the “Success Diary” group grew to 800,000 subscribers. Advertising prices also increased in proportion to traffic. For one post they easily paid 1000-1500 rubles. It was at this time that I met Lisa. She became my muse and ideological inspirer. Using advertising revenue, we went on vacation to Turkey (Marmaris), and then went to Thailand for the winter.

Lisa: The group now has almost 950,000 subscribers. We exchanged posts in partner groups, thereby expanding our audience. Such mutual PR is one of the main strategies for the development of groups and publics in VK. They bought advertising from us quite often. Vitalik and I thought that it would always be like this.

    – Have you ever had any failures? Or is your life a complete rainbow movie?

Vitaly: Of course there were. And more than once. I’ll now tell you about the most powerful thrash that happened to us at the end of 2014. At that time, a crisis came to Russia, and with it the solvency of advertisers, those who ordered commercial posts in our group, fell. That dark day has arrived. We lived in Bali then. Suddenly, the demand for advertising dropped to 1-2 orders per week. The last 15 thousand rubles remained on our cards. Happy days are behind us. There is uncertainty ahead. We didn't even have money to buy tickets to Russia and return home.

Strategic Mistake #2: “We went on a spree and spent ALL our money without thinking about the future.” I didn't think about tomorrow. Lived here and now. Lisa and I had fun traveling. We thought that such a chocolate life would never end. We were wrong. But now we know for sure: you need to think about where you will be in a month and in a year.

    – How did you get out of the crisis? What did you do?

Vitaly: On a warm Balinese evening we sat by the sea and talked. We made plans. We dreamed. Speaking of dreams: we never lost heart for a moment...

We heard about a new and still incomprehensible service for Russians - Instagram. This topic interested us greatly. And no wonder. According to the Instagram guys, in one advertising post in an account promoted to 100 thousand subscribers, you can take up to 10,000 rubles.

We borrowed 200,000 rubles from relatives and invested in the promotion of two communities on Instagram: books and horoscopes. Promotion took a lot of time - as much as 3 months. All this time we worked almost 20 hours a day and lived in the cheapest room in Bali. We worked according to Moscow time - this was required by the promotion strategy. After 90 days of hard work, our Instagram profiles had 100,000 subscribers each. We started providing paid advertising. And, lo and behold, our hopes were justified - this is a mega-demand segment. Now we have a network of 18 accounts, and our personal popular page on Instagram. The total audience on Instagram from all accounts exceeds 2 million people. When we started, there was little competition, prices were high, and advertising was bought frequently. Now the market is filled with many pages with the same topics, competition has become very high, and, accordingly, advertising earnings have fallen by about 3 times. We feel that days of uncertainty will soon come again. But this time we are ready for such a turn, since there are already outlines for new projects that we are starting to develop now.

Now we have a network of 18 accounts, and our personal popular page on Instagram. The total audience on Instagram from all accounts exceeds 2 million people.

    – Guys, tell us about your YouTube channel. How much income do you make from videos?

Lisa: Our video blog “At our own pace” is our whole life. A brainchild that we have just begun to develop at a decent level. This entire project rests on the pure enthusiasm of two people, that is, ourselves. We love making videos and sharing them. Previously, we shot more amateur films while traveling – just for memory. Then we decided to create a channel about travel, and now this is a whole video blog with a three-year history and a huge amount useful information. Youtube is another very profitable niche, but becoming popular and getting millions of views is very difficult. We are still at the development stage, and the income from the channel is very small - $200-300 per month. We have several cameras, a quadcopter for aerial filming, stabilizers, microphones and other gadgets necessary for filming; we shoot very high-quality videos and spend 80% of our time on video, so we hope that our efforts will be justified and the channel will truly become popular.

Strategic mistake No. 3: you can earn A LOT on YouTube and NOT on Google Adsense. For a long time, we filmed and posted travel videos more for the soul than for earning money. But in reality, the YouTube channel is a goldmine. The audience is more than loyal, you can sell information. Many bloggers earn hundreds of thousands of rubles a month by selling courses through affiliate programs.

    – What do you expect from the promotion of the YouTube channel “On Your Own”?

Vitaly: The video blog does not bring in a lot of money yet, but this income can be considered one of the most stable. This is my dream job. You don't owe anyone anything, you shoot for your own pleasure. You are truly free. Friends, there is nothing more valuable than freedom!

We are now actively making money on affiliate programs, and yes - this brings us up to 25% of our total freelance income. We traveled far and wide throughout Thailand, Bali, Indonesia and the Philippines. We visited the Maldives and shot a series of videos for our subscribers. We do not advertise cool hotels and places where millionaires “live”. It's boring. Our videos feature real adventures, countries and cities through the eyes of ordinary tourists. This is why our channel is popular.

    – Why do you rent budget hotels and eat in street eateries in every new country? Why don't you choose a more expensive type of tourism?

Vitaly: Who needs all this show off? Our audience is the same freelance guys as ourselves. We have many things in common: a thirst for adventure, a passion for travel, FREEDOM from stereotypes, working “for someone else” and domestic realities. Therefore, when we arrive in a new country, we check into ordinary hotels, show ordinary restaurants and cafes - places where locals and tourists with an average income go. And that's cool! We chose a different path - the path of free life where we want, that is, somewhere warm. Our approximate monthly expenses are $1000 for two, which is quite a bit. And for us it’s better to live somewhere in a budget hotel in Bali than in rainy St. Petersburg.

    – Guys, tell us about your plans for the future.

Lisa: Work, work and more work. Development of new accounts on Instagram, increasing the client base - advertising buyers, paid shooting of clips from a quadcopter (we also make money from this), self-realization. We will visit new countries and show videos of the most unusual corners of the planet. Nothing is holding us back. We are free and determined. Our thirst for adventure will never dry up!

Vitaly: My biggest dream, which is also my immediate plan, is to travel around the USA in a cozy trailer. Lisa and I also want to travel all over South America and shoot a bunch of videos for our regular subscribers. The most important thing is that the Internet does not let you down. For example, in Singapore and Thailand there are no problems with this. There are Wi-Fi points on almost every corner. And in the Philippines and Vietnam, the Internet is only via very, very slow 3G. The hardest part is filling the rollers. It’s a shame when you start uploading a video to YouTube, a day passes, the screen says “99% loading”, and then the video crashes, you have to start from scratch.

My biggest dream, which is also my immediate plan, is to travel around the USA in a cozy trailer. Lisa and I also want to travel all over South America and shoot a bunch of videos for our regular subscribers.

    – Which place on earth seems to you the best?

A travel blog on YouTube is one of the extraordinary ways to make money in the travel niche, not only with Travelpayouts, but also with other monetization methods. Vitaly and Lisa from the channel “On Your Own Move” shared (approx. author’s style preserved) their experience of creating, promoting, monetizing and maintaining the channel. Over the past 7 years, they have visited 42 countries and grown their channel into a popular Russian travel video blog. Now the channel has almost 200 thousand subscribers and 33 million views.

Tell us who you are, what results have you achieved to date?

We are Vitalik and Lisa - travelers and bloggers. We have been traveling for 7 years, during which time we have managed to visit 42 countries and gain a reputation as a popular travel blog in Russia. Now on our YT channel “At Your Own Move” almost 200 thousand subscribers (only 20 thousand are missing) and 33 million views.

In addition to our video blog, we are actively developing other social networks: VK group(63 thousand subscribers) and instagram(255 thousand subscribers).

Our blog is about the fact that independent travel is possible and necessary for everyone, and we only suggest how to do it easier, cheaper and more interesting.

Experience in developing VK publics, Instagram channel network

Now we are fully engaged in our project, and few people remember that a little over a year ago we had one of the largest networks on Instagram of 18 pages with 2.5 million subscribers and VK group for 1 million subscribers(by the way, this is perhaps the only thing we still pay attention and time to).

We promoted a group on VK a long time ago, when public networks were just beginning to emerge (2011) and our mistake was not to create a few more groups. Back then, investments in the public were minimal - only 30 thousand rubles and we had a group of 100 thousand subscribers. Then we promoted it to 1 million absolutely free of charge using exchanges and free advertising between public pages.

Then Instagram appeared and began to gain popularity in Russia (2014), and we, remembering past experience, immediately created a network of entertainment pages: about books, horoscopes, cinema, English, gifts and life hacks. More money was invested in the first two pages - 200 thousand, but the rest of the network was promoted in just six months, which brought good results.

We can say that we “caught the wave,” and for about three years it slowly rolled towards the shore, bringing good income.

Why did you eventually settle on travel blogging on YouTube?

In short, this is our dream. Travel, but not just like that, but to share something useful with people, inspire and motivate them. That is why all the projects that we were involved in (the same public pages), they were simply an auxiliary element, a business that brings money for the most important thing - our travels.

We invested all the money into our channel and travel. And just recently (about a year ago) the moment came when we decided to discard all other projects and focus only on the blog. Because if you want to achieve something, you need to devote 100% of your time to it.

When and how did the idea to create your own travel video blog come about?

The channel was created by Vitalik when he came out of the army and wanted to upload his videos. We didn’t know each other then, and we certainly didn’t think there would be any kind of project. When we met in 2011, 10 days later we went on our first trip (not on our own, by the way), then on another.

From each such trip we brought small video clips from which we made clips of 3-5 minutes. There was no talk about the channel then. And in 2012-2013, our first long winter in Asia took place, the first country was Thailand, then Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia - in the end we left for 8 months.

We also filmed small videos for ourselves, but friends and acquaintances started asking us questions. Usual questions like how to leave, how to remove the bike, etc. And we decided, “Let’s voice our videos and make instructions for those who will go to Thailand.”

We sent everyone one link and didn’t have to answer the same questions 100 times. These videos are still on our channel, they are the very first. That’s where the project came from, they came up with a name and started posting it on the same channel that we created.

There were no video blogs then, YT was just in its infancy, there were no travel blogs, we had no one to look at and do the same. We did what we thought was interesting. Therefore, the path to what we have now was very long 😉

How does this combination of video blog + classic website work, what helps what?

The website doesn't help at all because it's not that popular. Previously, they wrote a lot of articles on it, but there is not enough time and now it is just like a business card. If the site is well promoted, then it helps very well in promoting videos, because when you post a video on the site, Youtube counts transitions from external sources and this is well appreciated. Roughly speaking, it's like posting a link.

How does the YouTube + VK combination work?

In addition to the channel, it is very important to have other social networks.

Firstly, every person is used to and most of all uses only one (maximum two) social networks. It is important to convey information and cross-publish across all networks. This is how new subscribers are attracted to the channel.

Secondly, the group is simply an excellent means of communication and ADDITION to the channel. For example, in a group you can post photos, some life stories, or just announcements of events. People know in real time where we are and follow us (on Youtube there is still a lag from real time). Someone learns about the release of new videos from the VK group, and may not even be subscribed to the channel. Plus, this is additional income - you can sell advertising in the group.

About the specifics of the topic, its advantages and its difficulties

Perhaps travel is one of the most difficult channels to promote. You can't just sit in front of the camera and tell us how beautiful the Maldives is. You have to go there and film everything. First of all, this requires money, and secondly, you need to process a ton of information on the Internet and look for your own life hacks.

After a day of filming, you have to come to your hotel, edit and upload the video, but usually in Asia or in other countries the Internet leaves much to be desired. Videos may take 3-5 days to load.

The content is not lying around - in order to create an interesting travel blog (especially now), you need to constantly come up with something (ordinary travel around Thailand is no longer of interest to anyone).

Another difficulty is that not all people travel. The reasons for this are different, but more people come to YT to relax and have fun, watch something funny and take their mind off work. This is why we have travel show formats, when we travel with a team, and it turns out to be a mini DOM-2. It’s more interesting to watch such a show with a travel sauce.

Of course, there are also advantages. Traveling is like a drug; try it once and you'll be hooked forever. For us, it’s simply a way of life, and it’s hard to imagine it any other way. It is very interesting, develops you, constantly throws up surprises and obstacles that you must cope with. Traveling introduces us to amazing people who become our friends. This is great!

Travel is easy to film; you don’t need a script or anything. You film your feelings or the people around you - this is your content.

The audience is a separate and biggest plus. Our audience (albeit small compared to millionaires), but it is lively, bright, energetic and mature. An adult means she is solvent, which is why advertising costs more 😉

What is important for maintaining and developing a travel channel?

Oddly enough, the first is technical part: come up with good trendy names, write tags, etc. The second is external content: high-quality and interesting content, be yourself and see what is popular now. Try to fit your travel theme into what is interesting to people now. It is important to communicate with the audience, respond to comments, arrange meetings, hold competitions, and give gifts.

What are the main expenses for channel development?

Now the average advertising price for bloggers is from 50-100 thousand, for tops 300-800 thousand. We are not ready to invest that kind of money yet (and without a guarantee of subscribers). We can say that we don’t spend anything on the channel: only our time, which is essentially the most valuable thing.

All expenses are travel itself (from $2000 per month) and, of course, equipment, which often breaks down.

What is the most effective way to spend time + money when developing a travel channel?

Personally, we would spend money on good equipment for high-quality pictures (which we did) and on an editor who would edit the episodes. This frees up time (the most valuable) for filming and for generating interesting ideas. Installation takes most of the time and therefore it is worth delegating.

About the income of travel bloggers

It's simple: more views = more money from built-in advertising. The channel’s earnings depend not only on the number of views, but also on the channel’s audience. For example, built-in advertising on a children's channel costs $1-2 per 1000 views, and built-in advertising on a business channel can cost $6-9 per 1000 views. Of course, the number of views for a children's channel and a business will be different.

Inline advertising is shown before the start (or at the end). You can skip it, but sometimes you can’t (Youtube decides this), and if you can’t, then it’s valued higher. And also pop-up banners (we put 3-4 pieces per video every 30 minutes)

Another type of income is cooperation with various companies and brands. The most popular methods are pre-roll (a 30-second insert before the video) and integration (a native mention of a product or service embedded in the content). There may be a flight of your imagination or arrogance, since prices for bloggers range from 30 thousand and up to 2 million for cooperation.

What else can you make money on? Selling your courses (info business), any affiliate links(for air tickets, hotels, insurance, etc.), cashbacks, etc. Full list available programs.

You can learn more about the information business in tourism, who shared his experience in selling information products for travelers.

    How do you attract advertisers?

Additionally, we don’t involve anyone in any way; we work with those who wrote it themselves. For this purpose, we have left contacts in the group, on the channel and on Instagram. Personal messages are open EVERYWHERE, mail, Whatsapp, including direct + all instant messengers.

How to sell services from the YT channel?

The most important thing (what we adhere to) is to advertise a product that you yourself use or would definitely use. That is, something that carries information or value for people.

For example, we never advertise casinos, bets, etc. We try to advertise travel-related products, but it’s important to say honestly what you think and not follow the advertiser’s lead. If you respect your audience, they will respect and listen to you.

What works better, a button inside the video, or a link in the description?

To be honest, we don’t follow such statistics, but as in the example with social networks, it is better to use all methods. Something tells me that if you say in a video that the link is in the description, then it will work better than a button in the video - many don’t even know about its existence, but everyone is used to links and knows where the description is.

Do you have a donation link - does this model work in the RU segment of viewers?

She works on the streams that we sometimes host.

Tips for channel and video promotion

The most important thing is to optimize the video well (tags, query) and come up with an intriguing title. The secret is simple - display the video as recommended. The more it is recommended, the more views it will receive.

The cover for the video is also important. Ideally, the cover for a video should not duplicate the title, but complement it (that is, the inscriptions should not be duplicated on the title and on the cover, but this is very difficult to do and does not always work out). The cover should have a WOW effect! then you want to click on it.

Clickbait is a very popular topic now, but it should not be overused. Unnecessary people come to the channel and dislike for it, but do not subscribe to the channel, or subscribe, but not “your” people. In a word, this does not bring anything good.

You need to know what number of views per hour is normal or above average for your video. When a video comes out, you look at this metric. If it is lower, then the video does not work, then draw conclusions (wrong time of video publication, wrong title, wrong picture) - in this case, it is better to immediately change the title and picture.

In the first hours of the video, maximum publication is needed on all possible resources (we upload to all groups and public pages).

Interaction with the audience: it is important to write comments. If everything is vanilla and sweet, people won't write. It is important for a video to evoke an emotion in people: it can be good or bad. Therefore, you can deliberately make mistakes in the video (people like to correct them), do something that infuriates you on purpose (for us it’s slurping, licking your fingers - it didn’t happen on purpose, but people write about it), focus on little things, ask their advice.

Asking people to like it helps too.

Listen to your audience if they tell you to change or do something. Of course, you can’t please everyone, but if, for example, a comment says that “the sound is crap,” then it’s worth changing the microphone. But again, there’s a fine line here, if they say don’t slurp, but you slurp in all the videos, this could be your thing :)

What do you think about travel blogging in English?

By the way, content is also difficult to promote. We know several travel channels on English language- this is cool, but if you are originally Russian-speaking, but in English it will be difficult to maintain a blog, and it will be completely unrealistic to get promoted; in the English-language segment, all topics have already been occupied for a long time. But, by the way, earnings in the USA are 3-5 times higher than in Russia on YT.

What advice can you give to someone who decides to start travel blogging on Youtube in 2019?

Come up with your own format, your own trick. If you want to start another travel blog, the same as everyone else’s, then it’s better not to. And go straight in with quality content and something trendy.
