How to make a metal surface in Photoshop. Metal. We do it in Photoshop

To give text a metallic embossed effect. First, let's write the word beautiful font, then apply different layer styles to it, simulating an embossing effect. At the same time, we’ll create a new pattern ourselves, then lightly decorate the background with a gradient. Let's give the text a glamorous gloss and decorate it with spectacular glowing dots.

Step 1.
We create new document size 600x400 pixels. Fill it with color #535559.

Step 2.
Use any suitable font (the font should not be too thin) to write a word. The font used in this tutorial is Bello. Size 188pt.

Step 3.
Double-click on the layer to open the layer style and set different styles sequentially. Let's start with the Drop Shadow tab. Let's set the values as in the figure below. Blend mode “Overlay” (Overlay).

Step 4.
Tab “Inner Shadow”. Blending mode “Multiply” (Multiply).

Step 5.
The “Pattern Overlay” tab. But first we'll make a new pattern. Let's create a new 5x5 px document and fill it with color #07212c. Enlarge the image as much as possible and use the Pencil tool to paint over the pixels, as in the picture below. 3 dark pixels #000b10 color, 3 light pixels #3b4e58 color and 2 corner #283942 colors. After that, go to Edit > Define Pattern. Now in the layer style, select this pattern.

Step 6.
Tab "Stroke" (Stroke). We make a one-pixel gradient stroke on the outside.

Step 7
This is the intermediate result.

Step 8
Now let's slightly decorate the background of the document. Go to the layer with the background, open the layer style and set following parameters for the “Inner Shadow” tab. Blend mode “Soft Light” (Soft Light).

Step 9
In the “Gradient Overlay” tab, set the following colors for the gradient: from dark #475e68 color to light #667c85 color.

Step 10
The picture will look like this.

Step 11
Let's add a gloss effect to the text. Create a new layer on top of all layers. Hold Ctrl and click on the text layer to select it.

Step 12
Now take a gradient from white to transparent and drag the mouse from top to bottom of the text. Then take the Elliptical lasso tool and select an area, as in the picture below.

Step 13
Now invert the selection Shift+Ctrl+I and press Del, deleting the excess.

Step 14
Change the blending mode to “Overlay” (Overlay).

Step 15
Now let's add a spot glow for the text. Take a soft brush, size 27 px, color white, and on a new layer, place white luminous dots in random order along the edges of the text. Then change the “Transparency” (Opacity) to 70% and change the blending mode to “Overlay” (Overlay).

The final
As a result, we got this original metallic embossing effect for the text.

What You'll Be Creating

The process of painting metal can be a very interesting experience as you can achieve amazing results with a few tricks. In this tutorial I will show you how to paint shiny metal (polished silver, chrome) as well as old used metal (weapons, armor). I'll use the silver goblet and ax as an example, but you can use the same techniques to paint a metal texture on any other object.

What you will need

  • Hard-soft pencil (HB)
  • Soft Pencil (2B)
  • Soft Pencil (4B)
  • Soft Pencil (8B)
  • Shading, for those drawing with a pencil
  • Ruler
  • Pencil sharpener
  • Eraser (preferably a kneaded eraser)

Before you start painting, take a look at the finished metal images to get an idea of what you're trying to achieve:

1. How to draw shiny metal

Step 1

You can draw any metallic object with a glossy finish, but let me show you how to draw a metallic goblet in a few steps.

Start by drawing the top part: draw 2 ellipses and connect them with straight lines. If necessary, use hard-soft pencil (HB) and a ruler. Draw with light pressure on the pencil, making the lines barely noticeable.

Step 2

Imagine the foot of a goblet, draw slightly smaller ellipses to create a soft transition.

Step 3

Connect the ellipses together with lines, creating the outline of the cup.

Step 4

Step 5

Draw lines along the cup to help you see the perspective. It is very important to imagine the cup as a three-dimensional 3D object!

Step 6

Take eraser and carefully erase the extra lines.

Step 7

Detail the image, make it look more like the real thing - again, this will give the metal structure more shine.

Step 8

Time to cast shadow! Angle your pencil and fill the inside of the cup with shadow.

Step 9

Take shading and carefully blend the shadow so that it becomes uniform.

Step 10

Look at your object, imagine that it is standing in front of you, determine in which part the light source is located. Then darken the parts that are not lit. Use blending as needed.

Step 11

The most important thing in metal is shine and it is created by contrast. Gently darken one side of the goblet to create a light effect on the other side of the goblet.

Step 12

Also darken the other side, but this time do not create a clear line of light and shadow. Instead, create a soft transition.

Step 13

The main darkening is already behind us, and now it is necessary to increase the contrast. Take soft pencil (2B), tilt it and darken the inside of the goblet even more. Use blending as needed.

Step 14

Use the same pencil on the very edge of the cup. Make a clear edge, then make smooth transition to the main part of the cup.

Step 15

Do the same with the other side.

Step 16

Use the same pencil to highlight the border between light and shadow. Give the separation border a strict transition that gradually softens.

Step 17

Darken other areas of the shadow to even out the contrast.

Step 18

Take soft pencil (4B) and darken the sides of the inside of the cup to give it a 3D look.

Step 19

Take soft pencil (8B) and darken this part even more, blending into the main shadow as much as possible. This will be the standard for the darkest, darkest shadow.

Step 20

Metallic denotes strong contrast in reflection. Let's give the surface a chance to reflect something. Sketch the outline of the black stripe on the other side.

And fill this part very soft pencil (8B).

Step 21

It's already starting to shine! Let's just add some small details. The inside of the cup is as shiny as the outside, and it reflects itself. Use this fact to create an interesting effect. You don't have to be 100% neat, just make it look like the inside surface is reflecting something.

Step 22

Since metal is a highly reflective substance, it also reflects....itself. That's why we need all these protuberances - they absorb light from the surface and reflect it with the help of shadows.

Step 23

Use all the pencils to even out the contrast of the entire cup.

2. How to draw old, scratched, rusty metal

Step 1

Shiny metal is beautiful, but a shiny sword looks like it hasn't been used! Let's look at how to make a more realistic metal look using a battle ax (halberd) as an example.

Draw the base of the blade - this part attaches to the handle. Draw one side, then the other and connect them with lines. Use hard-soft pencil (HB) and a ruler.

Step 2

Extend the main part, creating space for the blade and point at the back.

Step 3

Draw the blade and point.

Step 4

Add details to the main part. We'll need them soon.

Step 5

Take an eraser and clear the drawing of unnecessary strokes.

Step 6

Even old metal has the ability to reflect, so it is necessary to determine which part will be reflective. It is best to take the corners of the main part for this purpose.

Step 7

Angle the pencil and darken the entire object, leaving only the highlighted part white.

Step 8

Take shading and blend the darkened parts. There should not be even a drop of white anywhere except the white part.

Step 9

Take soft pencil (2B) and add shadows to the main part to give it a 3D shape.

Step 10

Darken the blade a little more, but do not go into the line of light.

Step 11

Even out the contrast in the main part, making it evenly dark.

Step 12

Take it again hard-soft pencil (HB)(make sure it is well sharpened) and draw scratches with a pencil along the border with the illuminated part. Give the scratches different directions - these scratches are caused by cleaning and sharpening.

Step 13

Very parts in hard-to-reach places such as deep scratches collect dirt that is difficult to clean. Use this effect to make your weapon more realistic.

Step 14

Old metal products are usually not perfectly smooth; create slightly concave spots on them.

Step 15

If you want to add rust, take soft 4B and 8B pencils and draw irregularly shaped rust marks.

Brilliant! Beautiful!

Today you learned how to paint realistic metal structures, both new and shiny and old and scratched. We hope you enjoy the other lessons in this series:

Today we will do metal in photoshop. Then it can be used as a background or basis for letters, frames and various kinds of clipart.

Let's create a document. I mainly use A4 format, as the result is in good quality. If necessary, the format can always be reduced, but enlarging it without losing quality will be problematic.
After the document is created, fill it with a gradient. Choosing a tool Gradient and use colors:
1 #434037
2 #575447
3 #8a8374

Now fill the background from bottom to top, or top to bottom, whichever you prefer, and move on to the next part of the work.

Now we need to add a new layer: Layer / New / Layer… Fill it with white.
Next, add noise to the new layer: Filter / Noise / Add Noise… Set the value Amount – 200% Choose Gaussian and put a tick on Monochromatic

Add a filter - motion blur. Filter / Blur / Motion Blur… Meaning Angle - 90%, Distance - 204px

Please note that along the edges the stripes will be more distinct than in the middle part, so we need to remove them. I'm just dragging this layer out. In order for the deformation grid to appear, check the box next to Show Transform Controls , on the top panel.

It remains to change in this layer Blend Mode to Overlay and everything is ready. For convenience, you can merge layers by clicking Ctrl+Shift+E We got the effect metal. It can be used as a background or blank for further work.

And, as I like to do, a short video to help newbies understand the whole process more clearly.

It’s quite easy to create beautiful metallic text in Photoshop. Just a few simple manipulations with layers, assigning the right styles and you're done. Even a beginner can handle it. I offer you a text-picture lesson and (a little later) a video lesson on this topic. By the way, this technique, of course, is suitable not only for text, but also for any silhouettes.

1. Create a new document with a size of 1000 x 700 px. with a resolution of 72 Dpi. Take the metal texture, copy and paste it into the created document. Press Ctrl+T and transform according to the document boundaries.

2. Take another metal texture, open it in Photoshop, go to the image menu → image size and set the settings as in the screenshot. Next, go to the edit menu → define pattern, enter a name, for example “steel” and press ok.

3. Create a new layer with a white fill in the same document. Let's make the main color black, select a round brush, set the size to 1 pixel and hardness to 100%. Let's draw chaotic scratches on the white layer. Go to the Edit menu again → Define, enter the name “scratch 1” and click OK.

4. Create another new layer and repeat step 3, with the only difference being that we will make the scratches more frequent and add a little bolder ones (by increasing the brush size accordingly). Let's define a pattern called “scratches2”.

5. Let’s create the text we need by making it (what exactly it is doesn’t really matter). Text color is white. Then double-click on the layer with the text and in the window that pops up, set up the layer styles in accordance with the screenshots below.

You should get something like this:

6. Create a duplicate of the layer with the text (Ctrl+J) and remove the effects from the duplicate - simply by dragging them to the trash can of the layers panel. Set the fill value for this layer to 0%. Set the styles for this layer as in the screenshot.

After these manipulations, you will see scratches on the letters:

It should be understood that most style settings are selected for a specific document size. Other sizes require adjustments to the values in the layer styles.

For those who do not really understand all of the above, a video tutorial is coming soon, which will be published here, and in which it will probably be easier for you to understand the sequence and essence of the actions.

Hello! What are you doing?
-Hello. I'm going to finish watching my series and die.
-Let's go for a walk!?
-Well, okay, let's go. I'll watch it next time.

In this tutorial you will learn how to create bronze text using layer styles in Photoshop program. So let's get started!

Final result

1. Create the background

Step 1

Load the black_background.pat texture by double-clicking on the source file.

Step 2

Create a new document, let's go File - New(File > New). Set value Widths(Width) to 600 px, and the value Heights(Height) by 500 px. Permission(Resolution) should be 72 dpi(ppi).

Step 3

Being on the background layer, duplicate it, for this we go Layer - Duplicate Layer(Layer > Duplicate Layer) and click OK. Name the duplicate layer Background Pattern(Background Pattern).

Step 4

Go to (Layer > Layer Style > Pattern Overlay), select the 'black_background.pat' texture from the dropdown menu, set Scale(Scale) 50%, and click OK.

Step 5

To add lighting effects from above, select a layer style Embossing(Bevel & Emboss). Apply settings for of this style layers shown in the screenshot below:

2. Create the text

Step 1

Write the word 'Round' or any word of your choice using the 'Stonecross' font. Install Font size(Font Size) 132 pt, and also set Tracking(Tracking) 20 pt. To improve quality, change the method Antialiasing(anti-aliasing) on Sharp(Sharp). Name this layer with text ‘A01’.

Translator's note: The anti-aliasing method can be changed in the lower right corner, in the font settings.

Step 2

Next, select a tool Moving(Move Tool), select the text layer and the background layer, and then in the settings of this tool, select the following options: Aligning centers horizontally(Align Horizontal Center) and Aligning centers vertically(Align Vertical Center) to align the text.

Step 3

Duplicate the text layer and name the duplicate layer ‘A02’. Arrange the layers as shown in the screenshot below. Temporarily hide the 'A02' layer so that it is convenient for you to work, because... We won't use this layer until part 4 of this tutorial.

3. Apply styling to the main layer

Step 1

Load the texture 'scratched_metal.pat'.

Step 2

We will be working with layer 'A01'. Go Layer - Layer Style - Pattern Overlay(Layer > Layer Style > Pattern Overlay), click on the box Pattern(Pattern) to select the ‘scratched_metal.pat’ texture from the drop-down menu. We use this texture as a basis for creating a metallic effect.

Step 3

To get a realistic bronze color, we go Layer – Layer Style – Color Overlay(Layer > Layer Style > Color Overlay). Change the blending mode to Multiplication(Multiply), and also set the following values:

Step 4

You will need to create the contours of the curves yourself to get the volumetric effect. Please read the screenshot below carefully and also apply the values indicated in the right column.

Step 5

Select the 'Cove - Deep' path from the path set.

Step 6

Now we'll improve the metal's shine effect by adding a glow. Let's go Layer - Layer Style - Inner Glow(Layer > Layer Style > Inner Glow). Set the values shown in the screenshot below.

Step 7

Next, we need to add shadows to separate the text from the background. Let's go Layer – Layer Style – Outer Glow(Layer > Layer Style >

4. Apply styling to the second layer

Step 1

Now we will work with layer 'A02', do not forget to turn on the visibility of this layer! Next, let's go Layer – Layer Style – Outer Glow(Layer > Layer Style > Outer Glow). Set the values shown in the screenshot below.

Step 2

To improve the 3D look, we will emphasize the light and shade on the edges. Let's go Layer- Stylelayer— Embossing(Layer >Layer Style > Bevel & Emboss). Set the values shown in the screenshot below. Create your outline using the values shown in the right column.

Step 3

This is a very important step. We'll create perspective using a central vanishing point in perspective.

Let's go to the bookmark Symbol(Character) and change Horizontal scale(Horizontally Scale) by 98%, as shown in the screenshot below.

Step 4

To make the colors of both text layers match each other, go Layer - Layer Style - Color Overlay(Layer > Layer Style > Color Overlay). Set the values shown in the screenshot below.

Step 5

Tip: To add a gradient stop, you need to click below the gradient bar. By clicking on the gradient's control point, you can edit Positions(Location) and Colors(Color) control point.

Step 6

In this final step we will add some depth to make the text more expressive. Apply a layer style Shadow(Drop Shadow) using the following settings.

Great job, we have completed the lesson!

In this tutorial I showed you how to create a metal the background, as well as bronze text using layer styles.

I hope you enjoyed this tutorial and can use what you learned in your projects.
