How to open a CSV file in Excel

In order for the table creation program to correctly decrypt this document, you need to do one trick: open the file in any text editor and write “sep=” in the first line. That's it, now the application recognizes the comma delimiter and displays the content correctly!

What's in the CSV file

This is a regular text format for tabular data. Each line is one row in the table. Values in individual columns are separated by commas. Because this extension is supported by many programs, CSV files can be used to import or export tabular data between different computer applications, such as a spreadsheet and a database.

Microsoft Office is an office suite of desktop applications, servers and services, released by Microsoft on August 1, 1989 for the Microsoft Windows and Mac OS X operating systems. Originally, the first version of Microsoft Office contained Microsoft Word, a word processor and was previously considered the main program in Office; Microsoft Excel, a spreadsheet program that originally competed with the dominant Lotus 1-2-3; and Microsoft PowerPoint, a popular presentation program for Windows and Mac.; a marketing term for a bundled set of applications. As years passed by, Office applications have grown significantly closer with shared features such as a common spell checker, Object Linking and Embedding (OLE) data integration and Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications scripting language. Its central functionality includes a word processor, a spreadsheet and a database management system. Newer versions have a calendar application and a dictionary while older versions included a terminal emulator. Files with WPS extension is utilized for output files of the Microsoft Works word processing application. These files are classified as text documents that can be created, saved, viewed and edited using the Microsoft Works program. Microsoft Word 2010, Microsoft Publisher 2010, Planamesa NeoOffice, and OxygenOffice Professional are some of the applications that are able to open and view the content of these WPS files. The contents of these WPS files can also be exported to other compatible word document formats. This promotes convenience and efficient document presentation, group collaboration and sharing between users of different systems and word processing applications; however, WPS document cannot be applied with macros and other formatting options available in Microsoft Word; so Microsoft discontinued support and development of the Microsoft Works application with its version 9 and the release of Microsoft Word 2010.

Microsoft Notepad

Microsoft Notepad

Notepad is a basic text editor used to create plain documents. It is commonly used to view or edit text (.txt) files, and a simple tool for creating Web pages, and supports only the basic formatting in HTML documents. It also has a simple built-in logging function. Each time a file that initializes with .log is opened, the program inserts a text timestamp on the last line of the file. It accepts text from the Windows clipboard This is helpful in stripping embedded font type and style codes from formatted text, such as when copying text from a Web page and pasting into an email message or other “What You See Is What You Get† text editor. The formatted text is temporarily pasted into Notepad, and then immediately copied again in stripped format to be pasted into the other program. Simple text editors like Notepad may be used to change text with markup, such as HTML. Early versions of Notepad offered only the most basic functions, such as finding text. Newer versions of Windows include an updated version of Notepad with a search and replace function (Ctrl + H), as well as Ctrl + F for search and similar keyboard shortcuts. It makes use of a built-in window class named edit. In older versions such as Windows 95, Windows 98, Windows Me and Windows 3.1, there is a 64k limit on the size of the file being edited, an operating system limit of the EDIT class.

Microsoft Excel 2010

Microsoft Excel 2010

Microsoft Excel 2010 is one of the many versions of spread sheet tools that were released by Microsoft. This program has built-in tools which includes the ones being used for visualization and analysis which helps its users highlight as well as track the data trends which are considered important. This version allows its users to access their data even with just the use of a smartphone or a Web browser. The file that is being created using Microsoft Excel 2010 can be uploaded to the Web which will allow it to be accessible to your colleagues as well so that you can all work together on the file. It has the capability of allowing its users to visualize the summary of their data with the use of the built-in tiny charts that can actually fit inside the cell along with the user’s text data together with Sparklines.

In your program, you must create a table with columns containing the values of your future products.

Example table:

In the very first row of our table, it is mandatory to use the field names for our products. We have it article- vendor code, name- Product Name, price- price, vendor- manufacturer, country- Country of Origin, images- path to the image (details below).

Obligatory field to create goods there is only one thing:

  • name- Name.

There are also main fields, which are necessary for the functioning of the product:

  • price- price,
  • article- vendor code.

Obligatory field to synchronize goods one thing:

  • UniqueKey - a unique identifier for the product in the management system; do not fill out this column yourself.

Other product fields can be selected arbitrarily from the total number of fields. (you can add new fields for your products or other objects.)

You can specify column names to add or change values:

  • info:url- field for URL substring;
  • info:name- field for Name of object in the system;
  • info:sort- a field for sorting objects within a section;
  • info:access- field for specifying access rights (for example: 7733);
  • info:template- field for Output template, output template indexes can be viewed;
  • info:delete- field for deleting a product, create a column and fill the product cell with arbitrary data to delete it throughout the import.

You can see the list of product fields like this: click “Options” → “Object types” → “Product”.

In our editor the table looks like this:

Once the table is complete, export it to CSV format. And save the file, for example on your desktop.

In CSV format, if the file is opened using Notepad, the table will look like this:

articul;name;price;vendor;country;images UX31E;ASUS ZENBOOK;44400;Asus;China;http://site/alboms/3/3/zenbook..jpg HD-8838;Philips Saeco HD 8838;27462;Philips ;Russia;http://site/alboms/3/3/saeco-hd-8838.jpg HD-8838;Delonghi ECAM 23..jpg

When importing from CSV you can specify:

  • Product section (any level), if the section does not exist, it will be created;
  • Product parameters;
  • Path to product images (images must be in the same zip archive as the CSV file);
  • Specifications;
  • Discounts;
  • Dimensions.

Requirements and capabilities:

  • The names of the goods must be different:
    • If a product with the specified name is already in the section, it will be skipped;
    • If the import file contains products with the same names in one section, the products will be assigned the indexes “Name (X)”, where (X) is a serial number starting from 1 (unit).
  • The CSV file in the archive must be one and located in the root of the archive;
  • Images for uploading must be packaged together with the CSV file, except for images with a URL;
  • The number of sections and products in CSV is no more than 5000;
  • The CSV format does not support line transitions, so data or text within a cell using a line transition will be interpreted incorrectly;
  • The CSV format uses semicolons ";" as delimiters, making it impossible to use this character in text;
  • The total weight of the archive should not exceed 64 MB for Economy and Standard tariffs, 128 MB for Luxury and Maximum tariffs. During free use, there is a 3MB limit.

Advice: Create multiple products by filling in all fields and use the CSV export feature. Open the file in the editor and you will find out what data you need to use in the table cells.

An example of a prepared CSV file for import with images can be downloaded .

Import of goods

Go to your content management system and click right click mouse over the desired section, as if you were going to create one new product, then “Create” → “Import”. A window will appear asking you to enter a file and file type. Click "Add" and select the "CVS" file type. Click "Import".

If all steps are completed correctly, you will see the following window.

Product synchronization

To synchronize products, they must first be exported.

You will download a file with approximately the following content.

This file is in CSV format. Open it with a spreadsheet program (Microsoft Excel, Apple Numbers, or OpenOffice Calc). Column UniqueKey- contains a unique identifier of the product in the management system. You can change all product values, except this values in the column cells UniqueKey .

If you clear the cell with the product identifier, it will be re-created,
with the title " Copy (N) (Title)", Where (Name)- its name from the column name, and N is the copy number .

Import the corrected CSV file into the management system as described above. Products containing a recording UniqueKey- will update their data, products with an empty cell UniqueKey will be created.

If you have not edited and do not intend to edit the values of a column, you can remove it from the import file. This will speed up file loading and import time, because... unnecessary data will not be processed.

For example, if you wanted to change only price of goods, only columns should be left in the import file price And UniqueKey, the remaining columns need to be deleted (together with the column header, i.e. delete the entire column).

Attention! When synchronizing products, you can specify the section where the product will be placed. In this case, import the file into the folder for which you specified the placement of the product.

CSV files are designed to store tabular data in regular format. text files. To open such a file you do not need special program To work with tables, any simple text editor is sufficient. This format is often used by various kinds of scripts to store small amounts of data.

Instructions

  • Use a simple text editor (such as Notepad) to manually create a CSV file. If you need a file that does not contain any data, then simply save an empty document with a csv extension - for example, data.csv.
  • Separate the contents of adjacent table columns with a comma if you need to place some tabular data in the file. The very name of this format (CSV - Comma Separated Values) is translated from English as “comma separated values”. However, it is more convenient and therefore more commonly used to separate values with semicolons. This is due to the fact that in most non-English-speaking countries, it is common to use a comma as a separator between the integer and fractional parts of real numbers.
  • Place only one row of tabular data per row of the CSV file. That is, the line ending character is the row separator of the table contained in such a file.
  • Use spreadsheet editor, if you don't want to create the CSV file yourself. Most spreadsheet programs can read and save data in this format. For example, you can use the office Microsoft application Excel 2007: Once you have created (or opened) a table in Excel that you want to save as a CSV file, click the large round Office button in the upper left corner of the editor window. In the menu that opens, go to the “Save As” section and select the bottom item - “Other formats”. This menu item is assigned " hotkey"F12 - you can use it.
  • Expand the "File type" drop-down list and select the "CSV (comma delimited)" line. Then enter a name in the “File name” field, select a storage location and click the “Save” button.
  • Answer affirmatively (the "OK" and "Yes" buttons) to the questions that Excel will ask twice before saving the file. In this way, the editor will warn that the CSV format does not support text formatting, the use of “books” and “pages,” formulas in cells, and other options available in the spreadsheet editor’s own formats.
  • Designed to present tabular data. Each line of the file is one row of the table. The values of individual columns are separated by a delimiter character - a comma (,). However, most programs freely interpret the CSV standard and allow the use of other characters as a delimiter. Particularly in locales where the decimal separator is a comma, a semicolon is typically used as the table separator. Values containing reserved characters (comma, semicolon, new line) are surrounded by double quotes ("); if there are quotes in the value, they are represented in the file as two quotes in a row. The lines are separated by a pair of CR LF characters (0x0D 0x0A) (in DOS and Windows, this pair is generated by pressing the Enter key). However, specific implementations may use other common line separators, such as LF (0x0A) on UNIX.

    Despite the presence of RFC, today CSV is usually understood as a set of values separated by any delimiters, in any encoding with any line endings. This makes it much more difficult to transfer data from one program to another, despite the ease of implementing CSV support.

    Example

    Original text:

    1997,Ford,E350,"ac, abs, moon",3000.00 1999,Chevy,"Venture ""Extended Edition""","",4900.00 1996,Jeep,Grand Cherokee,"MUST SELL! air, moon roof, loaded ",4799.00

    Resulting table:

    For Russified Microsoft Excel (in systems where the list separator is set to a comma), the source text will look like this:

    1965;Pixel;E240 - formaldehyde (dangerous preservative)!;"red, green, broken";3000.00 1965;Mouse;"And it would be more correct""Use Christmas trees"";;4900.00 "N/a";Button ;Keyboard shortcuts;"MUST USE! Ctrl, Alt, Shift";4799.00

    Resulting table:

    Programs for editing CSV files: Microsoft Excel, Numbers, TablePro, CSVed, OpenOffice.org Calc, KSpread, Google Docs. Importing and exporting CSV files is possible in many engineering packages, such as ANSYS and LabVIEW. Nokia PC Suite also creates CSV files when copying SMS messages from mobile phone on computer.
