How to open a disk drive if it won't open

If you pressed the drive open button several times, but this did not lead to the desired result, you can assume that the button is faulty. You can verify this or refute these assumptions by listening to the clicking sound when you press it. But if the goal is to open the drive, proceed to the methods described below.

Use Windows Tools

In the operating room Windows system It is possible to open the drive directly from the interface, without having to press a button. To do this, go to “My Computer” and right-click on the drive. Next, select “Eject” from the pop-up menu, after which the drive should open.

Please note: There are also dozens of applications that allow you to open the drive. Most often these are programs whose main purpose is to burn discs. If the method described above for opening the drive using Windows did not give results, you should not resort to third party applications, since they refer specifically to the operating system command.

Open the drive with a paper clip

When designing a drive, manufacturers include the possibility of emergency opening. The user can manually move the mechanism that is responsible for opening the drive. To do this, there is a small hole on the front panel of the device, where you need to insert a needle and press so that the mechanisms work and the drive opens.

If the problem is related specifically to mechanical jamming, and not to a malfunction of the electronic board, then this method almost always helps solve the problem. You can also try to pry the drive tray with a thin tool and try to pull it out using mechanical force, perhaps eliminating the snag that prevents the tray with the disc from opening.


Important: By applying great force in an attempt to open the drive, you can break the gears that are responsible for extending the tray. They are most often made of plastic.

Checking the cable and reconnecting the drive

When none of the tips listed above helps open the drive, you should try unplugging it and reconnecting it. To do this, turn off the computer and remove the side cover system unit, find the drive cables and disconnect them.

One of the most common malfunctions of DVD players is the failure of the disc loading mechanism (the tray does not open either upon command from the remote control or using a button on the player body).

Symptoms

The player turns on, the display works normally. When you try to open the tray, you can hear something twitching and stopping inside. It seems that something is mechanically interfering with the tray. At the same time, the word “OPEN” lights up on the display, although the tray has not moved out.

If you press the tray close button again, the message “LOAD” appears, and then “NO DSK” accordingly.

If you open the tray manually, it closes without problems. Playback from a USB flash drive works fine.

What is inside?

The heart of the circuit is the MT1389DE (128 pin) video and audio processor. To control the motors, a driver based on the SA5888 chip is used (see). The driver has analogs: CD5888, SA5888, AM5669.

By the way, in order not to follow the wrong trail during repairs, you should keep in mind that on a working DVD player the processor gets quite hot, and, apparently, this is the norm for it.

It was also noticed that two BR8550 transistors, which generate voltages of 3.3 and 1.8 Volts (connected to pins 1 and 25 of the SA5888, respectively), are noticeably heating up.

Why won't the DVD drive tray open?

So here you go three most common reasons, due to which the drive in the DVD player does not eject.

Reason #1

The most common problem - power problem. Quite often during repairs, a partial loss of capacity of the filter capacitors in the power supply circuit is revealed (drying out, swelling). Sometimes defective capacitors are visible to the naked eye, but more often their malfunction is indicated by strong ripples in the power supply (an oscilloscope can help you).

This leads to buggy operation of the motor driver, freezes during playback (and the symptom begins to appear primarily on DVD discs), or even to complete inoperability of the player.

Of course, the reason that BBK does not see the disk may be simple dust on the lens, but if the drive mechanism also does not work, then the problem is not dust.

We replace the capacitors with high-quality new ones (necessarily 105C). It is recommended to install an additional ceramic capacitor with a capacity of ~1 μF in parallel with each electrolyte.

Reason #2

Second probable cause: failure of one of the engines. The player includes three commutator motors direct current with a nominal operating voltage of 3 volts.

There is a high probability that some kind of trouble has happened to one of the engines: a jammed rotor, an internal break or a short circuit. Sometimes a break or short can only be detected by measuring the resistance while simultaneously turning the motor shaft by hand. Normally it should be in the range of 8-20 ohms.

It is noteworthy that the malfunction of even one of the engines can affect all the others. In particular, a non-working laser head positioning motor results in DVD player Doesn't open the drive. Engines can be replaced with exactly the same ones appearance, but designed for a voltage of 5.9V.

Reason #3

The third thing that is definitely worth checking is serviceability of the carriage initial position sensor*.

Over time, an incomprehensible greenish substance accumulates inside it, which, apparently, is a mixture of copper oxides and lubricant. This composition has some electrical conductivity, which leads to false alarms of the sensor.

Before giving the command to open the tray, the controller pushes the carriage into starting position(until the limit switch is triggered) and steps back a little. After which the carriage, together with the laser head, goes down and the tray slides out. If the button is always pressed (due to contamination), the operating logic is disrupted, the controller concludes that there is some kind of error and stops the program.

You can verify that the button is faulty by temporarily cutting the track. In this case, the tray will begin to open and close as expected.

The driver chip provides protection so that voltage is supplied to the head positioning motor only for a certain period of time. Regardless of whether the head has reached the set position or whether the limit switch is triggered, the motor will run for approximately 3 seconds and turn off.

The problem is solved by replacing the button. If new button If you couldn’t find it, you can try to disassemble the old one and clean all the giblets with a toothbrush dipped in alcohol:

There are software failures or the power simply suddenly turns off, and you urgently need to give the disk (for example, to your neighbor :)). How to get the disk?

Let's start with the most banal methods:

  • Have you tried pressing the open button several times in a row? Did not help? Then let's move on.
  • Turn off your computer, wait a few minutes, and then turn it on. This helps when the drive freezes and rebooting gets it started again.
  • Use system tools: go to the “My Computer” folder, right-click on the device and select “Eject”.

Mechanical methods

Try some of this:

  • Take a paperclip, wire or needle. The drive has a special hole for emergency opening with a diameter just for the listed tools. You just need to insert the needle into the hole and apply a little pressure in a jerking motion.

Do you have a slot-loading drive? As a rule, they do not have such holes, so you don’t have to look. If there is an emergency button, it is usually a touch button, which does not help in the case of a non-working computer.

  • When a device jams because the disk inside is not seated correctly, you often need to help it open a little. To do this, take an object like a knife, only with a blunt end, so as not to scratch anything; you can also use a coin. And while using it to pry the device from different sides, simultaneously press the button to open it.

There are cases when the drive itself is not displayed in the system. Has your computer recently been repaired or crashed? Maybe the drive cable just came loose and that’s why it doesn’t work? If you have a desktop computer, unscrew the side or back panel system unit, find the power cord and cable, check if they are inserted securely (this is, of course, a very rare case, but it can still happen).

  • If you don’t know what to do if the drive does not open, then you need to unscrew the entire rear plastic or only in the drive area. I can’t say specifically, all laptops are different.
